Destination Unknown
Here's their story. . .
So, we started a new series last night called Destination Unknown. We took the kids to the Wal-Mart parking lot and split them into 2 groups (Jeff took one, I took the other). Each group had an envelope with about 9, one dollar bills in it and 9 slips of paper with a message on it. The kid's job was to hand out the dollar bills, and whether or not the person took the dollar, give them a slip of paper. They were to pay attention to the reactions they received from everyone as they gave them a dollar. Once all the dollars were gone, we all congregated back at our cars to have a lesson. While we were talking about how the reactions people gave to receiving the dollar are the same ways people react to receiving God's word, a gentleman approached us (he looked to be about 30 years old) with his daughter, who was probably 5 or 6. He asked Jeff and I if he could share a story with us. We told him sure, not quite knowing what we were in for! So, he started talking, all the while holding his little girls hand, and getting teary-eyed every time he looked at her. He said that when his daughter was 1, he found himself with nothing more than the 2 of them, her crib, and a television set. So, they went to his parent's house and they let the 2 of them live in a spare room together until he got back on his feet. He continued by saying that at Christmas time, he was browsing in a store, when he came across this stereo system. He said he stood there staring at it, thinking how awesome it would be to have that so he could dance with his daughter to music. He said as soon as he walked away, knowing he may never have something like that, a man approached him and asked him if he wanted that stereo. He said, "Yeah, that would be nice!" And the man pulled out $300 in cash and said, "It's all yours!" He said that gesture was something he would never forget, and that he and his daughter still dance to that very stereo! He went on by saying that even though all we are handing out is $1 bills, he wanted us to know that we were making a bigger difference in people's lives than we may ever realize. The whole time, this man kept looking down at his daughter, with tears in his eyes, and you could just see the love he had for his daughter in his eyes. By the end of the story, every guy in our group had goosebumps and all the girls were crying. It couldn't have happened at a better time or place! They all looked at me and Jeff when he walked away and I said, "No, that was NOT planned" and they were all like, "WOW!!!", and that's all the kids talked about the whole way home. They even started discussing how they could help people become more accepting of God's work and how they could help people to not just shut down every time you mention God! I just drove and listened to this awesome conversation take place and thought how incredible God is for planning for us to be there at the same time as that man, and for leading him to us! (on a side note, we left the Harrison Street House about 25 minutes later than intended... so you KNOW that was ALL God's doing, so that man would be there when we were!)
